Mirror's Edge (PS3)

Design:
Mirror's Edge is a First-Person Action Adventure which tells the story of Faith. Faith is a runner (an underground network of people who carry important information from the sender to the receiver). Faith's sister Kate has been framed for murder and you have to clear her name. Throughout the game you must use your acrobatic abilities to outrun "blues" (cops). The game has a very impressive art design. Bright vivid colours set the city alight, with the general environment being white and other various buildings, boxes and ramps being a variety of bright colours. In between missions, you are shown exciting animation cutscenes, these look and feel different to the actual gameplay, but follow the story nontheless. The story is straightforward, interesting and short, and those with an interest in crime-adventure should like it. The soundtrack is perfect for the Mirror's Edge world. The tracks that play when you roam the city, the sounds around the city and the voice acting fits in with the general idea of the game.
Gameplay:
Mirror's Edge has a "parkour/free running" type of feel and is very similar in some ways. You run across rooftops and along walls, leap off buildings and over railings and slide under pipes. The game invites you to use these various techniques of running to create a free-flowing stream of movement, but it is not always the case. You often have to play the levels over again to find the best route. The game offers an impressive but restricted three-button control system. You have your jump, run and swing button. Your land button and a fight button. You also have an action button but you only use this for pressing buttons and interacting with doors etc...
Even though the game relies heavily on momentum, there is alot of trial and error involoved, whether it be to find the best route or to get past enemies. In combat you can either run past, choose to fight, or steal their gun and blow them away. Even though this sounds ok, you are still restricted in what you can do, for instance, when attempting to disarm the enemy you have to wait for the right moment when the gun turns red to disarm. This can sometimes be frustrating and you end up using the slow-motion feature. Once you get past the nine levels, there is not alot else you can do apart from several frustrating time trials that you must play over and over again in order to beat the time.
Overall I think this game is very good. The visual elements play a huge part in this and for some people, make the game. The gameplay for me, is exciting but also frustrating. I would recommend this game but be wary if you don't like playing the same parts over and over again.
